Review

Located near the Ikejiri-Ohashi intersection on Yamate-Dori, ramen shop Yakumo has garnered a reputation for serving some of the best wontonmen in all of Tokyo. The clear soup is made from a mix of meat, dried shrimp, mackerel and kombu seaweed, and comes with three choices of stock: a soy sauce-based 'black' dashi, sweet 'white' one, or a mixture of the two. Once you've selected your base, go straight for Yakumo's excellent wontonmen (¥850), a blissful bowl of plump wonton dumplings, golden broth and al dente noodles. The steamy kurodashi tokusei wontonmen (special wonton noodles in black dashi broth, ¥950), topped with firm, honeyed chashu pork slices, is also highly recommended. If you don't want to wait, skip the lunchtime rush and head over for a warming evening meal instead.
