There's a lot of organic veg on the menu – and not much else – at this Yoyogi-Uehara eatery, a reincarnation of the vegetarian-friendly Kanbutsu Cafe. Karankoron Shokudo serves nutritious, vegetable-laden lunch sets; on a recent trip, our ¥1,300 meal included bean stew, fried tempeh, kiriboshi daikon and komatsuna greens, pumpkin and raisin salad, miso soup and rice. In the evenings, there's an additional menu of à la carte vegetable dishes, as well as beers and organic wines. We were a little disappointed to discover that the food isn't strictly vegetarian – they use fish stock in many of the dishes – though you can get a 100% meat- and fish-free meal for groups of six or more if you reserve in advance.
