Review

2010 marked the 35th anniversary of this popular Hawaiian pancake house, whose first Japanese branch can be found in Harajuku. Originally based in Oahu, the shop is well known in its native locale for its pancakes, omelettes, egg dishes and locos, with diners queuing out the door. Japanese tourists in Hawaii are especially big fans, bringing back the shop’s special pancake mix as a souvenir, and since coming to Tokyo, the love affair with their pancakes shows no sign of growing cold. The Harajuku shop consists of a terrace and two indoor floors that are big on Hawaiian atmosphere, with light pouring in. Menu-wise, plain pancakes start at ¥550 and on the high end, topped with banana whipped cream and macadamia nuts, they will run about ¥950. Beyond pancakes, omelettes and eggs benedict, a slew of different kinds of waffles and crêpes are also on offer, ready to be topped with a variety of specialty syrups like guava and coconut, in addition to traditional maple.
