Commune 246 is an ambitious open-air collection of food stalls and a self-proclaimed hub for disseminating alternative culture. The most slick of the cafés here is Antenna Wired Cafe, not least because it’s a solid, properly built (and therefore heated and lit) structure with a spacious dining area and internet access for hot-deskers. The food and drink offer might sound simple – based around hotdogs, coffee and beer – but is remarkably well executed. Hotdogs cost ¥600-¥800 and come with six imaginative types of topping, including ‘Indian curry’, white gravy, pizza, and ‘kitsune' (which, as far as we’re aware, contains no actual fox). Our guacamole dog (pictured above) was a revelation, especially if you think hot dogs are just junk food: the topping of coarsely diced tomato, avocado and crisply-fried onion was sublime. Ask for napkins and maybe even cutlery, as it’s very messy finger food. To drink, there's unspecified but perfectly palatable ‘beer’ at ¥500, coffee, smoothies, and even a short list of so-called natural wines. The main reason to visit though is because of the upbeat vibe; the place is filled with young creatives and artists discussing their portfolios or just hanging out. This eatery is a cooperative effort run by the Wired Cafe chain and the people behind Antenna, the popular news aggregator app.
