The illustrious Ishikawa family has been churning out delicious Tama Jiman ('Pride of Tama') nihonshu by the Tama River in Fussa since 1881, but moved into beer brewing as recently as 1998. Their Tama no Megumi brews can all be sampled at this rustic pub and restaurant that's located on the brewery grounds and features a comfy garden terrace (open only during the summer months). The menu consists of relatively average Italian-inspired bar grub, including everything from pizza and pasta to sausages and steak, but nobody really comes here for the food. Ishikawa's Pale Ale, Weizen and Helles (Munich-style pale lager) are all quite decent, but the seasonal brews (Blueberry Ale on our visit – interesting) and the extra-sparkly Bottle-Conditioned Ale really bring out the cheers. Finally, even if you get all beered out, there's always the superb sake to fall back on.
