Make no mistake - Tokyo is still the unofficial culinary capital of the world. This year's definitive city dining handbook, the Michelin Guide Tokyo Yokohama Shonan 2014, was unveiled on December 3, and 14 restaurants (13 within Tokyo city limits) were awarded the top three-star rating. Although the number of three-star establishments dropped by one from last year, Tokyo continues to beat out every other city in the world (Paris is currently in second place with 10 three-stars). The guide also lists 59 two-star eateries and 208 one-star restaurants.

Ginza's 7-Chome Kyoboshi had the misfortune of dropping from three stars to two, while three new two-star restaurants were recognized, namely Dominique Bouchet, Goryukubo in Minami-Azabu, and Korean fine eatery Yunke. In addition, Hiroo's tempura-focused Uchitsu, Catalan gem Sant Pau, and Shonan's Taku-tei were promoted from the one-star to the two-star category. Debuting this year is the internationally popular Bib Gourmand section, which lists 157 non-starred, excellent-value French and Italian restaurants that serve lunch/dinner for under ¥5,000 per head.

As was the case last year as well, the 2014 Michelin guide is unfortunately only available in Japanese.
