Review

If you've grown tired of paying absurd mark-ups for inferior bottles of plonk, head to this basement wine bar and restaurant in Omotesando. The Cellar Grill's deep wine list is made all the more impressive by the fact that the bottles are being sold at retail price, with a corkage fee of just ¥600 if you want to drink them with your meal. French and US producers are best represented, though there's a bottle for just about every taste (and budget) here. Just don't be surprised if you end up spending as much as you would at any other restaurant, or even a little more: the temptation to pay a bit extra for something really good is hard to resist. Food comes secondary to the vino, but the menu of European-style morsels – including gorgonzola risotto, prawn ajillo, pate and prosciutto – is satisfying enough. At lunch, customers are given a choice of a single dish, accompanied by salad, rice, coffee and (no joke) all-you-can-drink wine, all for around ¥1,000.
