Review

There aren't many Tokyo restaurants specialising in chili beans. Actually, we can't think of any besides this Kudanshita eatery, an offshoot of local bakery Factory (which sits just around the corner). Modeled on the kind of hip diner you'd expect to find in Portland, Chili Parlor 9 offers some of the most wholesome fast food imaginable: its chili comes only lightly seasoned, and is available in both meat and vegetarian versions, as well as a daily special and ‘green bomb bowl’ topped with salad veg. The restaurant also does hot dogs (complete with housemade sausages) and sandwiches (all brown bread, natch), with three varieties of habanero sauce and some delicious own-made coleslaw and piccalilly on the side. Best of all, this Parlor is also open for breakfast, when you can get ¥700 sets including freshly made fruit juice and drip coffee.
