Review

The Dogenzaka branch of Shibuya Nishimura, a fruit shop with a history dating back to 1910, opened in 1935. The following year, in 1936, the shop expanded to also include a fruit parlour. The first floor houses a fruit shop and a juice stand, and the parlour, located on the second floor, offers a range of different items that take advantage of various seasonal fruits, such as lavishly decorated fruit parfaits. Also on offer here are various Japanese-style desserts, including mitsumame (a mixture of gelatin cubes, boiled beans, and fruit topped with molasses) and warabimochi (a jelly-like confection made from bracken starch and covered or dipped in sweet toasted soybean flour). The parlour is separated into smoking and non-smoking sections; however non-smokers should be forewarned that the boundary between the two areas isn’t particularly clear.
