Originator of the 1990s NYC 'cupcake craze', Magnolia Bakery has come a long way since it first opened in West Village almost two decades ago. Featured on shows like Sex and the City and in movies including The Devil Wears Prada, this modern classic's cupcakes, cookies, brownies and banana puddings have earned it a place in the hearts of people from Dubai (Magnolia's first non-US location) to Darwin and beyond. Tokyo's sweets lovers finally got a taste of Magnolia goodies when this Harajuku shop opened in summer 2014 to a raucous reception. Their combination of pastel colours and decadently sugary treats remains popular, with the queues often reaching all the way outside the building.
