5 to try: Falafel, Part 5

Tameike-Sanno: Pita the Great

Pita the Great opened in 1993 and, unsurprisingly, specializes in pita sandwiches. 1993 may not seem that long ago, but it pre-dates the current falafel boom, and this pioneering business is part of Tokyo’s falafel establishment. The falafel sandwich is called the ‘Big Pita', and the roughly shaped balls of falafel are fried up once you place your order, and have something of a rugged feel to them. They are also huge; just looking at them will make you feel full. To make the 'Big Pita', homemade pita bread (which they also supply wholesale to National Azabu Supermarket) is filled with falafel, sauerkraut, tahini sauce and spicy sauce — a very substantial meal indeed.
