Calling their new album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will was probably the most exciting thing that Mogwai have done this year. Lord knows that the title was more interesting than the record itself – another okay-but-not-great addition to a discography that's been frustrating expectations for at least a decade now – or the band's ponderous main stage set at Fuji Rock Festival in July. Of course, it's still possible that these once-virile Scottish post-rockers will manage to pull off something truly majestic when they return to Japan this month – their third trip to the country during 2011 – but don't count on it.
