Tokyo's reputation as the dining capital of the world took a minor hit today with the unveiling of the Michelin Guide Tokyo Yokohama Shonan 2013. After 17 of its restaurants earned the coveted three-star ranking in last year's culinary bible, the capital saw its total tally reduced to 15 in the 2013 edition, with Nihombashi eatery Hamadaya losing a star and Ginza sushi shop Araki vanishing from the book altogether.
Of course, that still puts Tokyo comfortably ahead of Paris (10 three-starred restaurants), New York (7) and London (2), with a total of 350 establishments making it into the guide this time around. Six new places were awarded two stars, a couple of them – French restaurant Esquisse and the Japanese-style Ginza Okamoto – only a few months after they first opened. And in a welcome concession to budget-conscious diners, the guide also continues its policy of designating places where you can eat lunch and/or dinner for under ¥5,000 per head, which includes a quarter of the restaurants listed in the latest edition.
No major upsets, in other words – which might explain why this is the first edition of the guide that's only being made available in Japanese. After releasing an English version of the book for its first five editions, Michelin has quietly axed it for the latest one. But not to worry: it you've already got the 2012 edition, you probably already know what to expect.
