This soaring, ship-like edifice of concrete and glass was opened in 1997 by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in the middle of the Marunouchi business district. Designed by award-winning architect Rafael Vinoly, it’s a huge, multi-purpose complex used for everything from conventions and trade fairs to exhibitions and pop concerts. Classical concerts are usually held in halls A and C; the former is vast, with seating for 5,000, but still manages to offer superb acoustics and a warm atmosphere.
