Roppongi Kingyo is a cabaret-pub theatre, founded in 1994, and was the first of its kind. It stands apart from other show pubs in Tokyo in that it seeks not only to entertain but also to deliver a moving message. The impressive stage is one of the best things about the show – it changes constantly; elevating, dipping, turning into neon-pink stairs or slanted wooden ramps, all the while with the performers twirling, jumping, acrobating and even Irish dancing their way on and around it. Kingyo has built a reputation on delivering slick productions that fuse innovation and tradition. In 2014 they're hosting their 25th-anniversary show which includes all the extravaganza you could want out of 60 minutes as well as more sombre references to Japan’s wartime past and flashes of a futuristic world. Although they're known for being sexually suggestive – the motif at the entrance apparently represents a goldfish kissing a penis, and a fair amount of the dancers employed are new-halfs (transsexuals) – the show itself does not feature any blatant nudity. This is easy after-work entertainment that can be enjoyed along with drinks and light meals.
