Five years after she was showcased in the Yokohama Museum of Art's Nihonga Painting: Six Provocative Artists exhibition, Fuyuko Matsui returns to the gallery for her first large-scale exhibition. Though she works in a tradition that's synonymous with conservatism, the 37-year-old artist has found a far wider audience by focussing on the grotesque and supernatural, as well as dealing with themes like sex, fear and madness. The show, subtitled 'Becoming Friends with All the Children in the World', will feature key works alongside sketches, drawings and some new pieces created specifically for the show. There are also plans to screen Matsui's first foray into film during the final month of the exhibition.
