Review

Vegetarians and carnivores will both appreciate this organic izakaya, a shrine to the macrobiotic and real food movements that offers an extensive vegan menu, as well as carefully sourced meat and fish dishes. Take a night off from scrutinising every ingredient in your salad and enjoy excellent – and fabulously arranged – dishes such as the makizushi (rolled sushi), made with vegetables and brown rice, and superb karaage that substitutes soybeans for chicken (although we could hardly tell the difference). The excellent ‘detox salad’ is also worth sampling, especially with an accompanying glass of organic wine, is also worth sampling. Gaya’s stylish basement spot is the perfect place to relax with a few friends – our only gripe that is the portion sizes don’t quite measure up to the prices.
