Review

Cattolica is a small miracle: this miniature eatery (seats seven or so) is run by certified pizzaiolo Mr Moriyama, who has managed to successfully recreate a piece of Rimini on the backstreets of eastern Mukojima. He only opens up his shop if you call ahead, but it’s more than worth the trouble – the pizzas are absolutely masterful, and despite the non solo pizza claim written on the board outside, they're the reason why loyal regulars keep coming back. In true Italian style, olive oil is used appropriately liberally, and all toppings maintain excellent quality. First-timers will feel safe with the bacon or prosciutto choices, while adventurers can go for the egg or natto (!) pizzas. Handpicked Italian wine is always on offer, as are interesting juices like ume (Japanese plum) and blueberry. If you're going for dinner with a group of two or more, we have to recommend the chef's seven-course set, which is an absolute steal for ¥3,500. It may be far from everything, but do make the trip, let your mind wander to fairer shores, and leave satisfied.
