The resemblance to the Eiffel Tower is deliberate, as is the superior height – it is 13m (43ft) taller than the Parisian structure. Back in 1958, when it was built, it must have been impressive. Nowadays, though, constructions such as the Mori Tower and Shinjuku’s Tocho both offer more impressive views. The tower still functions as a radio and TV mast, but its days as the observation deck of choice are long gone. The attractions inside, including a wax museum, only serve to highlight how dated the tower has become. But it remains Tokyo’s most recognisable structure and, ironically, its most striking attraction when viewed at night from any of the other observation decks.
