4: Heart Bread Antique: Chocolate ring

Half donut, half planet, the vast 'chocolate ring' is partially hollowed out and filled with gooey chocolate and nuts, and it really ought to be listed and protected as a national treasure. In fact, the only reason it doesn't rank higher on our list is because we're not entirely sure that it's a donut at all. It certainly looks like a donut, albeit one that could be used as a child's bed, and there are moments when you'd swear that it couldn't be anything other than a donut, just as there are times when you're pretty sure you're eating a danish pastry. Suffice to say that it takes a lot of time to finish, and leaves you feeling fat (if you eat the whole thing yourself) and confused. But the confusion is part of the charm. It's a donut with mystery: arguably the best kind. Chocolate ring. ¥500. Available from Heart Bread Antique, at various locations across the city
