Western readers will recognise this as the classic donut (minus the strawberry jam – we're still not sure how Japan has managed to develop a donut culture while completely skipping the essential ingredient). The texture is the perfect doughy consistency – strong, not particularly bread-like – and it is coated in a sweet, vanilla icing that covers your fingers so much that they require a good licking to get them clean afterwards. It's a good size, too: perfect for a lunchtime pitstop, and wonderful washed down with an iced coffee. Hard to beat. Vanilla beans donut. ¥380. Available from Doughnut Plant, at various locations across the city
