Tokusatsu: Special Effects Museum

Tokusatsu is the term used to describe those peculiarly Japanese films in which actors in suits roam around miniature cities smashing stuff up – think Godzilla, Ultraman, et al. It's the subject of this summer's tie-up between Studio Ghibli and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, an annual tradition that started back in 2003. Expect to see miniatures used in popular SF and fantasy films from the 1950s and 1960s, alongside a recreation of an effects warehouse and a 16x16m Tokyo cityscape (just don't break anything, yeah?). The show is curated by Hideaki Anno, who worked as an animator on Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind before finding greater renown in the 1990s for Neon Genesis Evangelion.
