Mainly active in London and Paris, the Massachusetts-born James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) rebelled against the moralistic Victorian art consensus with his support of the Aesthetic Movement and pursuit of 'art for art's sake', painting simplistic but iconic works like 'Whistler's Mother' and 'Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket'. Whistler was also heavily influenced by Japanese art, a fact that's highlighted at this extensive three-part retrospective focusing on the master's portraits, landscapes and 'Japonisme' pieces.
