Review

Mujin-to Production – involved in everything from artist management to the planning and holding of exhibitions to the production of original merchandise to book publishing – has made itself a conspicuous presence on the art world. To add to their influence, they’ve just moved from Koenji to Kiyosumi-shirakawa in April, have opened a new event space there: SNAC. The space is a collaborative production with Azumabashi Dance Crossing, a cutting-edge performing arts project that plans and stages events involving contemporary dance, theatre, contemporary art and even comedy. SNAC brings work from both groups together in the same space; while artists represented by Mujin-to Production are holding an exhibition, dancers connected with Azumabashi Dance Crossing might stage a performance or live event. It’s a venue that guarantees an interesting experience whenever you happen to drop by, however, because some events require bookings, it’s worth checking the website as often as possible. As SNAC was previously an izakaya (Japanese pub), it has also got a Japanese-style tatami room out the back, with a kotatsu heated table. The jury’s out on whether it’s a little chaos in the local shopping centre, or just artistic eccentricity. However you would like to see it, a new cultural focal point has been born in Kiyosumi-shirakawa.
