Review

Take a walk into the residential backstreets of Nakameguro and you might just find this excellent bakery and sandwich shop. Run by a former pastry chef who practised his art in Paris, Chapeau de Paille deals mainly in French-style baguette sandwiches, but also sell some croissant versions and dainty pastries. Our favourite was the popular avocado and ham sandwich, a voluminous but light combo that will satisfy all but the hungriest eaters. Note that they only bake one batch of bread every day, and the shop closes as soon as stock runs out. Also, taking place on Thursdays, the weekly vegetable sale is a great chance to get your hands on reasonably priced, super-fresh produce from the chef's hometown of Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture.
