Review

When Emperor Meiji died, on 13 September 1912, General Nogi Maresuke and his wife proved their loyalty by joining him in death; he killed himself by seppuku (disembowelment), she by slitting her throat with a knife. The house in which they died is adjacent to the Nogi Shrine, which is dedicated to his memory. The house is open only two days a year, on the eve and anniversary of their deaths, but an elevated walkway allows you to peek in through the windows, one of which provides a glimpse of Nogi’s bloodstained shirt.
