The InterContinental opened in the mid 1990s in the hitherto little-explored area that fronts Tokyo’s Sumida river. Amid the industrial surroundings, the luxurious hotel and the adjoining New Pier Takeshiba shopping and dining complex stand out like a diamond in a cowpat. If its location is the hotel’s main shortcoming, then its prime selling point is certainly the view over the river and spectacular Rainbow Bridge to the island of Odaiba.
