Since opening in autumn 2009, this Waseda gallery has actively sought to exhibit a range or artistic forms including painting, sound art, fashion and architecture. The owner is up-and-coming gallerist Yuka Tsuruno, who has experience both in New York and at gallery Arataniurano under her belt. Yuka Contemporary is located along the Kandagawa River near Chinzan-so and is set in a relaxing environment surrounded by nature. The gallery regularly shows work by the unit Monaka (one of the unit members being fashion designer Kousuke Tsumura), fashion photographer Tim Barber, Kiichiro Adachi (who creates installations using plants), and Manika Nagare and Yu Yasuda (previous participants in Voca). As well as exhibiting works by one of the gallery’s affiliated artists each month, the gallery screens films and holds other events ensuring that visitors will come back for more.
