Review

A word of warning about this specialist rum bar in Nishi-Azabu: once you surrender to its charms, it's awfully easy to end up missing your last train home. Tafia stays open until 4.30am, thankfully, though you'll need longer than that to sample even a fraction of the drinks on offer, some of them impossible to get anywhere else in Tokyo. As a founding member of local rum association R.U.M. Japan, owner Chie Tato knows where to source the good stuff (which on a recent visit included the superb, limited-edition Ron Abuelo Centuria from Panama: don't look for it in the shops, as you won't find it). There's plenty to keep confirmed rum fans busy here, then, but Tato is also keen to educate newbies in the drink, and can tailor her recommendations according to taste – and budget. The food menu runs from snacks like palmito (palm hearts) to a fierce curry made with Bhut Jolokia chili – just the thing to pep you up towards the end of a marathon drinking session.
