Sompo Japan Museum of Art

When Vincent Van Gogh's 'Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers' sold for a then-record US$39.7 million in 1987, the painting found its way into the permanent collection of this gallery owned by Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. Housed on the 42nd floor of the company's headquarters in Nishi-Shinjuku, the Sompo Japan Museum of Art is also the proud owner of Paul Cezanne's 'Pommes et Serviette' and Paul Gaugin's 'L'Allee des Alyscamps, Arles', though these extravagant Bubble-era purchases are far outnumbered by the 200-plus works by 20th century artist Seiji Togo. The museum's special exhibitions tend to focus on European art, though also include an annual competition to support up-and-coming Japanese artists.
