Review

A reconstruction of the Shinbashi passenger terminus, part of the first railway in Japan, which opened in 1872. The current structure (opened in 2003) stands on the foundations of the original. These were uncovered during excavations, and can be viewed through a glass floor in the basement. Those of ironic bent may notice that Londoners still use stations every day that would be considered archaeological treasures in Tokyo, but quibbles aside, this is a great project, with a permanent railway history exhibition hall and English labelling. There’s also a pleasant cafe.
