A new spot for Harajuku hipsters opened last night, just a hop and a skip from Takeshita Dori. The Terminal is the kind of place you'd expect Tokyo to have in abundance, but which has actually been in short supply. Offering wifi access at very reasonable prices, the smartly appointed venue is targeted at what you might call nomad workers: digital and design freelancers who no longer have need for an office but still want somewhere to pull up an iPad and get down to business.

Calling it a web café would be doing it a disservice. Created in conjunction with a group of Tokyo creatives that include The Green Produce Production Co and Cibone Design, The Terminal has the feeling of a modern media company office – here a breakout space, there a well-lit corner with spring-loaded architect lamps. Around the room are books and binders, each devoted to a well known creator or brand, Japanese and foreign, intended to inspire anyone who has the time to browse.

Needless to say, the opening party on August 4 was attended by the great and the good of Tokyo's media scene, people that you'd imagine to find making use of The Terminal on a daily basis. That said, these are also the kind of people who like to be seen with the latest thing, so it's possible that The Terminal will end up as another hangout for Harajuku's teen squad once the novelty wears off. Even if that's the case, the venue's inspirational reading material and interior design is likely to serve an almost educational purpose. Imagine if just one of those teens asks about the James Brown Rolling Stone cover that sits on a shelf above the breakout space. What a world we'd be living in then.
