10: Mister Donuts: Pon de ringu

Straight in at number 10 is Mister Donut's pon de ringu: the readers' choice. Several weeks ago, we asked our Twitter followers to name what they felt was Tokyo's best donut. Remarkably, most of them responded with this suggestion. The pon de ringu, presumably named for its similarity in texture to Brazilian cheese bread (pon de queijo), is prepared using mochi flour, bringing an elasticated spring to every bite. There's a tad too much sugary glaze for it to climb any higher on our list (we could still taste the excessive sweetness several hours later), but it beat anything from its closest rivals, Krispy Kreme (surely the McDonalds of the donuts world), hands down. Pon de ringu. ¥126. Available from Mister Donuts across the country
