If you were looking to trace back the roots of weird and wonderful vending machines in Tokyo, the trail would probably lead you to a street near Chichibu Denki in Akihabara. This was where the canned oden vending machine made its debut, kickstarting something of a vending machine boom in the electronics district. Now all sorts of canned foods can be bought here: not only oden (hot or cold), but also ramen, tantan-men (spicy noodles), pasta in soup, curry risotto, and a fried noodle snack food called Creamy Curry Udon Takumi Age, produced by Sugamo Konaya curry udon shop. In fact, it seems like they'll sell anything that will fit in a tin, but hopefully they won't give up on the food that they know best: canned oden.
