Kyary Pamyu Pamyu goes dubstep

Check out the video for new single ‘Invader Invader’ – with added EDM

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu goes dubstep

In a move that already seems to be causing outrage amongst the trolling minions of YouTube, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has gone all Skrillex on us. After giving herself an alien makeover for the latest GU advertising campaign, the singer and Harajuku fashion icon has released the full video for the accompanying single, 'Invader Invader'. While the naggingly catchy chorus will already be familiar from the TV ad, the biggest shock comes at the 2:25 mark, when the jaunty synthesizers give way to a headbanging dubstep breakdown, complete with Kyary doing her best imitation of a hoodie-wearing teen at a Korn gig.

Coming so soon after Kyary's first US tour, it's tempting to see this as an attempt to curry favour with EDM-obsessed listeners overseas – though it might just be producer Yasutaka Nakata trying to wring some excitement from what's otherwise one of his less inspired Kyary singles to date. Following the barmy brilliance of recent hits 'Fashion Monster' and 'Ninjya Re Bang Bang', 'Invader Invader' and the accompanying video are more on a par with last year's 'Candy Candy' – good chorus, shame about the rest. Though maybe EDM fans will beg to differ.
