This small theatre has a system that ‘supports young performers through the theatre’, an idea that was put forward by Mr Oriza Hirata in his book ‘Geijutsu Rikkoku ron’ [‘Establishing an artistic nation’, published by Shueisha]. The theatre has abolished the practice of renting itself to theatrical groups, and instead all of the performances here are produced by Komaba Agora Theatre. There has been much talk about this as a revolution in how small theatres are run in Japan. The annual line up runs all year round; by coming to see plays here audiences are helping to support young performers.
