Abbott’s Choice
Start your night as you mean to go on: pints of Guinness, Bass Pale Ale and the in-house Abbot Ale are a thoroughly reasonable 650 yen during happy hour. Then you can head down to Japanese craft brew specialists Ant ’N Bee in the basement and try some more interesting beer. Daily, 6-8pm. 2F, 5-1-5 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo (03 3475 0353). Transport: Roppongi Station (Hibiya, Oedo lines)

Mixx Bar & Lounge
Book ahead if you want to get a window seat at the ANA Intercontinental’s main bar. Drinks are half-price during happy hour, and while this doesn’t include signature cocktails like the Caprese (Bloody Mary with espuma mozzarella, basil and pizza spice), equally odd choices like the tomato martini are fair game. Daily, 5-8pm. ANA Intercontinental Hotel 36F, 1-12-33 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo (03 3505 1111). Transport: Tameike-Sanno Station (Ginza, Nanboku lines)

Popeye
The suds at Tokyo’s most famous craft beer bastion don’t get any cheaper during happy hour, but each order of select drinks from 5-8pm (look for a crown symbol on the menu) will net you a serving of food. Think of the ‘otsukare-sama set’ as a good way of soaking up all that oh-so-delicious alcohol sloshing around in your gut. Mon-Sat, 5-8pm. 2-18-7 Ryogoku, Sumida-ku, Tokyo (03 3633 2120). Transport: Ryoguku Station (Sobu line)

Waterline
Floating barge-bar Waterline serves up wine, cocktails and beer straight from the T.Y. Harbor Brewery next door for 500 yen during happy hour. The place itself is moored to the dock, so that swaying sensastion is probably a sign that you’ve had a few too many. Weekdays, 5.30-8pm. 2-1-3 Higashi-Shinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo (03-5479-1666). Transport: Tennozu Isle Station (Tokyo Monorail)

Rehab
Providing a sloppy start to any Ni-chome pub crawl, Rehab lets you drink as much wine and cocktail as you can stomach for just 1,000 yen during happy hour. Daintier drinkers who’d rather order by the glass can do so at a 200 yen discount. Daily, 7-9pm. 2F, 2-13-16 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo (03-3355-7833). Transport: Shinjuku-Sanchome Station (Marunouchi, Fukutoshin, Toei Shinjuku lines)
