As you arrive at this riverside restaurant, you’ll notice that the stone entrance is wet, regardless of the weather. It’s a subtle way of saying that the place is spotless and ready to welcome guests. The maids will usher you to a private room with cherry branches brushing the window, then deliver a miniature lacquer chest of drawers containing traditional Kyoto cuisine. For service, food and a great view, it’s astonishingly good value, and even cheaper if you don’t mind dining in a shared, no-frills dining room. Book a day or two ahead off-peak, or several months ahead for peak season private rooms.
