Turtle hotpot isn’t everyone’s idea of a dream dinner, especially at these prices, but this 12th generation restaurant claims to have served every prime minister of Japan, as well as the cream of feudal-era Japanese society. Slashes on the entrance beams are said to have been made by frustrated samurai, who arrived after closing time. Everyone has the same set meal here: an appetiser of stewed turtle followed by a steaming turtle hotpot and then a bubbling turtle broth with eggs and rice. In case you’re wondering, it tastes a little like chicken. If you’re here for thrills, try the sake with turtle blood.
