If you’ve visited Kyoto’s major temples and palaces, you’ll have seen the art of Kansetsu Hashimoto (1883-1945), whose paintings adorn the sliding doors of some of the city’s biggest attractions. His vast home and studio now hosts a pair of restaurants and a museum dedicated to his work. Zuibensan is the fancier destination, with kaiseki meals at western-style tables and a view of the painter’s garden with pond. A more affordable option is the outer restaurant, Oshokujidokoro Hashimoto, with tempura rice bowls, hot tofu dishes and a street view. Admission to the garden, designed by the master painter, is included with your meal at either venue.
