Run Girl Night takes off

It all started with a tweet, ‘I want to create the kind of marathon that women will enjoy’. Now the date for Run Girl Night has been officially set for Saturday September 4, 2010.

Echoes of agreement came from a band of fifteen women who work in the media, fashion and beauty industries; together they came up with Run Girl Night based on ‘enriching every day with the power of female runners’. The competition was fully organized real-time via Twitter with Senshukai Co. Ltd and KDDI also lending their support after coming across the Run Girl public account (twitter.com/rungirlnight/).

Because it’s a marathon for women by women, the event will be held in the evening, meaning the participants won’t have to worry about the dangers of UV exposure. In addition, runners won’t have to deal with some of the other inconveniences of urban running; clean and comfortable toilets, changing rooms and childcare facilities will also be provided. After the marathon, participants will move onto the SOHO where there will be a party, fashion parade and other entertainment.

The prize for participating, aside from a sense of sisterhood and accomplishment: a handy shoe case. The case has been designed with help of one of the Run Girl members, a stylist, and careful attention has been made to the choice of materials and design. All the participants also have a chance to win a diamond or emerald necklace made by jewellery designers Bellesiora.

One lap of the course covers five kilometres, taking marathoners through Shiokaze Park, Higashi Yashio Park, Aomi Kita-Futo Park and Aomi Minami-Futo Park. Participants can choose either to compete in the one lap five kilometre course or the two lap ten kilometre course.

We highly recommend women new to competitive running or women who haven’t yet found a competition that meets their needs to check Run Girl Night. Registration can be completed on the Run Girl Night website which opened for registration at 12midnight on Friday July 9. Registration will be closed when capacity reaches 500 runners.
