New Year decorations: nice to look at, but what are you supposed to do with them once the last of the saké has been drunk, the mochi eaten and the hangovers slept off? In keeping with time-honored tradition, many Tokyoites prefer to see theirs go up in smoke, at mass bonfires known as Dondo Yaki. One of the larger ones takes place at the suburban Oyama Dairi Park, where the fire (or should that be pyre?) typically reaches 20 metres in height. Get there at 11am if you want to contribute your own decorations, though note that the bonfire itself won't be lit until 1pm.
