This mammoth, biannual market for dojinshi (fan-made manga and novels) is usually a celebratory affair, but the latest edition has been overshadowed by a bizarre otaku terrorist threat. Earlier in the month, the organisers of Comiket announced that they would be banning all works featuring the popular manga Kuroko’s Basketball (Kuroko no Basuke), after receiving a written warning of reprisals against the event. It's the latest in a series of incidents surrounding the basketball-themed manga, including threats of chemical attacks against creator Tadatoshi Fujimaki's old school, which led to it also being dropped from the recent Jump Festa event. Expect heightened security and baggage checks at Comiket – and, quite possibly, a sharp drop in the half-million visitors that it usually attracts.
