DJ NORI’s still at the top of his game with a career spanning 30 years, and even now he is still active on the scene as a DJ with big clout and influence.
Starting as a DJ in 1979, and moving his base to New York in 1986, Nori met Larry Levan at the legendary Paradise Garage, and through him was started playing at some of the most popular clubs in the city. Larry and Nori were associated with the likes of The Loft’s David Mancuso, Walter Gibbons, Danny Krivit, Timmy Regisford, Little Louie Vega, Nick Jones and François K gathered to create the SOHO club culture and sound.
In 1989, returned home to Tokyo for the opening of the fabled club GOLD in Shibaura. He played an active role as the club’s resident DJ while continuing his work abroad at Rimini, in Italy, and organising i-D magazine parties at the NY Sound Factory Bar (such as ‘Underground Network’ and ‘Café con Leche’).
To date, he has a formal 11 year career as a cross-over resident at Aoyama LOOP’s Wednesday party, SMOKER, appearing along with other respected guests such as DJ FUKUBA, TORU TAKAHASHI, LORD G., Harvey and Kim Lightfoot. 2005 saw a revival of SMOKER at Shanghai club BLOCK60.
Since 1979 DJ NORI has been choosing and weaving together songs with a balance between what he loves and what is happening with the usual comings and goings in music. The result is a groove that transcends global and generational boundaries, which has had his fans looking to him with much respect – something to be proud of.
DJ Kensei hails from Tokyo, debuting as a DJ in 1987 at the age of 17. He witnessed a realtime Genesis of DJ culture evolving before his very eyes. He worked as a jack-of-all-trades, spinning as an opening DJ, resident DJ, and guest DJ on a weekly basis both in and out of Japan during the late 80s and into the 90s. At the same time, he appeared as DJ at hip hop events and worked with famous artists from abroad, started his own units (GBC, MK FRESH DEF MESSENGERS), and also being especially active with live performances allowing for classic mixtape, CD and 12-inch releases.
From the mid-90s on, he expanded the scope of his musical expression into areas like fashion show musical production and direction, VJ and stage music, and organiser. He brings together live musicians with turntables, CDJ, drum machine and lap tops for various artists, eventually expanding his work since 2000 with remixes of Japanese and international artists on ‘INDOPEPSYCHICS’, and technology collaborations presented in ‘FINALDROP’ and ‘BANANACONNECTION’ which used field recording to riff on Yakushima and Haiti, and the environmental and poverty issues involved.
This resulted in ‘NUDEJAZZ’, a DJ versus musician duo project between ORGANIST’S KANKAWA with electronic improvisation live performance, ‘DJ KENSEI & QUIET STORM’ and ‘KEMURI PRODUCTIONS’ and the DJ mutual-session play-piece ‘OUTERLIMITS INC’, ‘COFFEE & CIGARETTES BAND’ which deal in reality and free-style DJ mixing and whose members take part in a huge number of events and release a large body of work. As a DJ, KENSEI continues to constantly expand his work and broaden his musical horizons.

After working on ‘ASTEROID DESERT SONGS’ in 1997, the Smurf collective took off. With the 2007 album, ‘Smurf otoko-gumi kosei to hatten’ (‘Smurf personality and development’), things continued with Robo Space and Zen-la-Rock and SPACE MC’EEZ in a studio live record titles ‘WUKOVAHSESSIONS’, and from then COMPUMA took charge of the Smurf collective’s turntables.
He’s worked with Afrika Bambaataa, as well as legends in the hip hop and electro sphere, and lent his individuality to the likes of GRASSROOTS, RAWLIFE in the quest for discovering a new kind of funk.
The unique 2005 reggae mix ‘STRICTLY ROCKERS revenge’, and after starting his own label called sonofcompuma, the album series ‘A DATE WITH COMPUMA’ was released. In spring 2010, a new mix CD with SPACE MCEE’Z and live DVD are planned to go on sale.

Starting out as a DJ in the 80s, he established several labels and received acclaim both in and out of Japan in avant-garde musical circles.
In 1999, along with Naohiro Ukawa and Tooru Takahashi, he established the living-legend party GODFATHER. Right now, he is operating on the underground dance scene in Tokyo, and has put out a minimal/click-techno mood mix CD called ‘MOTIVATION6 Adult Oriented Click Nonstop-Mix by MOODMAN’, edited by Towa Tei.
