Festival/Tokyo

With its primary venue, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, currently undergoing renovations, this year's Festival/Tokyo is taking things outside. It opens with a pair of performances staged in Yumenoshima Park by Romeo Castellucci and Norimizu Ameya, inspired by the work of early Showa-era poet Kenji Miyazawa, then moves on to happenings at a stretch of wasteland in Toyosu (René Pollesch's Cinecittà Aperta Ruhr Trilogy, Part 2, pictured), an outdoor event space at Seibu Ikebukuro department store (Ishinha's Landscape) and an as-yet-undisclosed location in Akihabara (new theatre collective Chaos Lounge's Chaos Exile). Many of the works will grapple with the state of Japan post-March 11 – the catchphrase for the event, quite simply, is 'What Can We Say?' An ongoing Emerging Artists Program will showcase up-and-coming dramatists from Japan, Korea, China and Singapore – in more conventional spaces, mind you – and the festival concludes with a performance of Jérôme Bel's provocative The Show Must Go On at Saitama Arts Theater.
