As far as directors go, Yasujiro Ozu ranks right up there with Akira Kurosawa and Kenji Mizoguchi as a legend of Japanese cinema. The 2015 edition of the Koto Cinema Festival celebrates the Fukagawa-born Ozu with three days of screenings, including a 35mm version of his 1953 masterpiece Tokyo Story (shown Jan 12 at 10.30am) and Keisuke Kinoshita's wartime epic Army (Jan 10 10.30am), a subtly anti-militarist piece that landed the director in hot water with the authorities back in 1944. The silent film special includes Harold Lloyd's 1925 classic The Freshman (Jan 11 1.30pm), screened complete with orchestral accompaniment and narration by a benshi. The full schedule can be viewed here (in Japanese only).
