The scenic garden of a World Heritage site is a wonderful backdrop to this eaterie. Guests sit around stone hearths, tucking into tofu, while a stream trickles between moss-covered rocks and miniature pine trees in the grounds of the famous Zen temple Ryoan-ji. The vegetarian set meal is good value, with a pot of tofu and local veggies paired with a tray of appetisers. No reservations necessary; minimum of two guests.
