Mr Sawaguchi was 55 years old when he wound down the family greengrocer business and converted his garage into a bar. If selling booze in your old garage sounds rough and ready, it couldn’t be further from the truth. The bar is furnished with antiques, stocked with rare spirits and vermouths, and plays jazz from a Denon-Marantz-Tannoy set-up, which could power a small club. Throw in a wine collection, a log fire and a genial host and you’ve got a fantastic place to go to for an evening drink.
