Dining with maiko is a typical Kyoto experience that few visitors get to try. Securing their services usually requires more money and better connections than a tourist enjoys. But in 2009, Gion’s Hatanaka ryokan began hosting maiko dinner parties, which are open to anyone with ¥18,000 to spare. A pair of maiko perform a traditional dance, lead you in some drinking games, and make nervous conversation as you tuck into top quality Kyoto cuisine. Foreigners are welcome, but don’t expect to have a fluent chat. You can book online in English.
