Neither the food nor drink is memorable here, but the setting certainly is. The building was created in 1928 as an office for the Mainichi newspaper company. When the journalists moved out, cafes and galleries moved in, the best of which lie in the basement. With crumbling brick walls, flaking paint and rusty artwork as decor, Independants provides a counterpoint to the elegant city. Live bands and DJs often perform in the evenings, with genres ranging from acoustic folk to thumping techno.
